Overview

About Industrial Oil Seals

Oil seals protect bearings and gear units by keeping lubricant in and dirt, dust and moisture out. In plant maintenance they are among the most frequently replaced components, so having the right size, profile and material available matters.

Sealing Technologies supplies industrial oil seals in rubber-covered and metal-cased constructions, with or without dust lips, as well as large-diameter, heavy-duty and split seals for equipment that is difficult to dismantle. The range includes Parker oil seals and JM Clipper seals, with special designs for gearboxes and mills. Send us the size, a part number or a sample and we will identify a suitable seal.

Industrial Oil Seals — Profiles and Specifications

Sizes and ratings are confirmed against your application. Where a value is not listed, it is available as per application requirement.

Rubber-Covered Oil Seals

An elastomer-covered outside diameter gives good static sealing in the housing bore, including on slightly rough or split housings.

  • Elastomer-covered outside diameter
  • Good static sealing in the bore
  • With or without dust lip

Large-Diameter Oil Seals

Oil seals for the large shafts found in mill drives, kiln drives, crushers and heavy gear units.

  • For large shaft diameters
  • Reinforced constructions
  • Standard and customized sizes

Split Oil Seals

Seals that can be opened and fitted around the shaft, considered where dismantling the equipment is difficult or costly.

  • Fitted without withdrawing the shaft
  • Reduces dismantling work
  • Suitability depends on duty

Identification

Three Dimensions Identify an Oil Seal

Shaft diameter, housing bore diameter and width — usually moulded on the face of the seal along with the profile code.

  • d — shaft diameter the sealing lip runs on
  • D — housing bore diameter the seal presses into
  • b — width of the seal

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I read the size of an oil seal?

Oil seals are normally identified by three dimensions: shaft diameter, housing bore diameter and width. These are often moulded on the seal face together with the profile code.

Can a seal be replaced without removing the shaft?

On some equipment a split seal can be considered so that the shaft does not have to be withdrawn. Whether it is suitable depends on the equipment and duty — our engineers can advise.
